On 78 Degrees North

Svalbard is the northernmost populated place on earth. Longyear has three kindergartens, a school, cafees, library and a big tourist industry. It's isolated, and the only way to leave is by plane.

I need a few more ways out, so living there wouldn't be for me. But I loved to visit! And I see why people get addicted to the Extreme Arctic Lifestyle.

It's a magnetic place.

As you can see from the sign above, there is a good reason for the fence surrounding the kindergarten.

I'm somewhere behind that "hat".

Wow - looks beautiful - but a little too extreme/remote for me! I agree- whilst i live on an island it is quite a big one - not sure I could live on a small island!

Love the hat!

I read the linked article. They can't grow anything at those temps--I wonder if they use greenhouses or fly all their food in. It was interesting how someplace as remote as that did not escape the devastation of World War II. I think I just realized how truly worldwide that war was. Could they not help themselves from bombing everything and everyone if they felt like it? Evidently not.

so the kindergarten has a polar bear fence? that sounds exciting!

it is so beautiful, but I agree, a place reachable only by plane would not be for me.

thanks for 'reporting back!'
