Malyss and Christine: In the past the sami culture was a victim of "orientalism" (Said), in the postcolonial context, showing a simplified, exoticiced culture, much like the native Australian culture. The plate is from the 60s, and it was like that back then. However that's changed today, and they still make souvenir platters, but the perception of the sami culture has changed, and complexified. Does that make sense? Puh, need a beer now.
