Arctic Mum Goes Northern Lights Chasing

Last night I was on a Northern Lights mission. I wanted to take amazing photographs of the green fire to show you all. Oh well, easier said than done.

I started off with surveying the situation at the pond at 8 pm. I chatted to a Dutch couple from the B&B across the road, and they enlightened me that the Northern Lights was particularly strong last night, number 5(?) So in this case: Don't ask the locals.

After researching on the internet how to capture the light, I brought my camera and tripod at ten pm. The Dutch were lying under some trees, God knows why - to avoid light pollution? (again, don't ask the locals) So I stumbled around on the ice, trying to find a place to shoot.

The sky exploded in green while I tried to focus - nope, I tried different shutterspeed and ISOs. In the end I was desperate and ran home to google more (Thank God for internet opening hours), I ran back and the fire went and on but I just didn't manage to capture it through the lense(s). So this one is all I came home with.

Did I mention it was cold last night? Yes it was. Freezing cold.

You should be rewarded for effort, right?

Great story and a lovely photo! The one and only thing I'm envy about is nothern light. I'm not envy about the cold and dark.

Yes, you should be rewarded for effort!! Seeing the Northern Lights is a dream of mine. I love looking for pics on the web, to have it right there in person is almost surreal to imagine!

That made me laugh - you described the scene really well! I could just picture you out on your mission, stopping at nothing to get the all important pic!... Great result! Lucky that little Anna is now sleeping in the evenings to allow her intrepid mum such adventures out in the arctic night...:-)

Wow, thank you for that! It's an amazing photo, and a great story behind it.

would love to see them one day, but sounds like taking a good shot as a memory is another matter. Photo looks great anyway, least you have one shot as evidence!

Hi there--I know it's been forever since I've visited with you here--hope you are well!

I just wanted to share that your Northern Lights in YOUR town Mali were a huge, top, front-page photo of our Washington, D.C., newspaper, the Washington Post.

This link may not work after today, but it was there, just the same!!

Thanks for your comments! Nancy - yes, I heard about that picture today! The Northern Lights has been massive lately. And Donyale - we need to house swap, once I survive a 30 hour flight with three kids!

You may not have captured the Lights to your satisfaction, but I loved the mental image of your Dutch people lying under trees. 'Totally random', as my teenage daughter would say.
